Origins

Our story begins long before labels, licenses, or ledgers. It begins with quiet tradition — with copper warmed by flame, and time allowed to shape the outcome. For generations, our family carried resilience and craft across continents, from early Europe to South Africa in the 1600s, and eventually to America. Throughout that journey, spirits were never produced for commerce. They were shared — reserved for meaningful gatherings and moments of connection.

South Africa

In South Africa, through my father and grandparents, this tradition found expression in mampoer — a fruit-based spirit deeply rooted in heritage distilling. It was never bottled for sale, never branded, and never hurried. It existed solely for family, neighbors, and trusted friends.

Madeira

On the volcanic island of Madeira, Portugal, my wife’s family walked an equally storied path. Her father and generations before him made wine and aguardente — one from the vine, the other from the still — shared only within their village, never sold or labeled. Neither lineage pursued scale or recognition. The craft endured for a single purpose: to bring people together.

KENTUCKY

Generations later, these histories converged in Kentucky, USA. Matthews Spirits stands at the intersection of old-world tradition and modern minimalism — where heritage distilling meets Kentucky limestone, and family legacy finds its voice.
